EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing) is recognised by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) for effective treatment of trauma. Traumatic memories seem to get lodged in the brain in isolation; they get locked into the nervous system with the original sounds, images, thoughts and feelings. When the traumatic experience is unprocessed and locked, it continues to be triggered. Hence, it becomes the basis for a lot of discomfort and dysfunctional behaviours, emotions or thoughts. EMDR helps by reprocessing and resolving the old memories and creating a sense of distance from the painful memories. The person treated with EMDR comes to an understanding that the event is in the past. They begin to feel more certain about present day safety and become confident to make choices in their life.
EMDR is also used effectively to treat a wide range of other difficulties such as anxiety, depression, stress, phobias, grief, low self esteem and performance anxiety. During EMDR, eye movements similar to those during REM sleep will be recreated, leading to changes in thoughts, images and feelings. With repeated sets of eye movements the memory tends to change in such a way that it loses its painful intensity and simply becomes a neutral memory of an event in the past. Other associated memories may also heal at the same time, leading to an improvement in many aspects of your life.
